The Photograph

I look at the photograph
and analyse your features.
I remember how happy we were,
and how much fun we had
the night that it was taken.

I remember how I placed my
arm around your shoulders,
turned to you and smiled,
and how you gently caressed my back
as we posed side-by-side.

I remember how in that distant place,
the rest of the world seemed to dropp away,
til there was only you and me,
alone, clinging onto each others company.
Together for the whole day.

You told me that I was fascinating,
and i told you the same.
You asked about my childhood,
my experiences and hopes and dreams,
you hung on my every word.

I look back now at how happy we were,
and wonder what became of you.
We promised to keep in touch,
but we never did,
nor will we ever do.

But the photograph shows the joy
that we each briefly knew.
A moment in time frozen for all eternity,
a permanent tribute to a path
briefly trampled, but never taken.

That was lovely story. The ending especially - road not taken... Surprised I'm the first to comment on it so far. Sincerely, R.
