The Poor Have The Gospel Preached Unto Them Poem by John Bowring

The Poor Have The Gospel Preached Unto Them

The Gospel is preached to the poor;
They long were abandoned and lone:
They now are forgotten no more-
The light of the Gospel's their own.
No longer they wander distrest,
In a gloomy, disconsolate road;
They are blest-for all nations are blest
With the life-giving glory of God.

The Gospel is preached to the poor;
To them are its promises given-
For Jesus has opened the door
Which leads them to hope and to heaven:
He owns them-He claims them as His;
He never will leave them to woe;
They shall share in eternity's bliss,
In eternity's prospects below.
