The Prisoner Poem by Mary Champion

The Prisoner

Though my body is trapped behind bars
I have thoughts out exploring the stars.
There's no system can keep me confined,
for, they cannot imprison my mind.

There are people existing outside
and they've no shameful secrets to hide
but they still might as well all be dead
'cos their thoughts can't escape from their head.

They don't ask, they don't question or plan
for they don't even know that they can
and although I've gone wrong, still it proved,
that sometime in my life I have moved.

Oh, I know that a man's born to fly
and I know that there's some reason why,
and I know there's an answer to find,
know they cannot imprison my mind.

I'm as scared and as weak as they come
and I either tell lies or act dumb,
but my dreams are all fearless and free
and some day they'll come true and free me.
