The Prize You Fear. Poem by WIN VENTURA

The Prize You Fear.

You fought to wear the crown I wore,
Believing you had won the war.
You claimed the prize with smiling eyes...
Yet victory came dressed in disguise.

You hold his hand, you wear the ring,
You own the dreams you longed to bring.
Then tell me why, through all these years...
Your heart still whispers hidden fears? !

You watch my steps though I have gone,
As though my shadow lingers on.
You search his eyes when I appear,
Hoping my name has disappeared.

You wanted me erased from sight,
To vanish with the fading light.
Life granted all you dreamed could be...
Yet you still measure yourself by me? !

I never knocked upon your door,
I never wished for him once more.
The chapter closed without a fight...
I walked away into my light.

Yet every smile you try to wear
Still hides a question buried there.
If love is yours, so safe, so true...
Why does my silence trouble you?

You feared I'd take what you think you had won...
I never wanted anyone.
The race you ran was yours alone...
I found my peace, I journeyed on.

So keep the life you chose to live,
Keep every dream that life could give.
Argue with silence every night.
For I need neither proof nor plea...
My heart has long since been set free.

Your greatest rival...
Lives inside you.
You feared I'd come and claim what's gone...
I never wanted him.
You fool,
Actually...you've lost, I've won.
