The Soldier Poem by George Aul

The Soldier

Rating: 4.5

I fought the battle,
I lost the war,
I never saw the enemy
sitting open on the shore...

I saw it was over,
I knew the fight was done,
I was killed by a bullet
from another son's gun...

I laid there bleeding,
I yelled a silent scream,
'Why was my life over,
is this real or just a dream? '...

I never saw it coming,
but there was plenty of pain,
my life has now been ended,
I lost - what a pitiful, damn shame!

Dedicated to all those soldiers who never made it home.
