The Soldiers Return Poem by Kevin Patrick

The Soldiers Return

Here comes Sam,
In the parade with his name
He's been gone
For tour of duty, or two
down holy lands
Where unholy things are made
he's got medals
to prove the deeds of his worth
and the streets
are jumped up in fireworks
see the kids
wave banners and sparklers
as the wise
hold small flags of their state
and good old Sam
Just smiles onwards and waves
see his eyes
Look more older then graves

Tell us friend
What battles you've won
So the world
Knows whose number One
Here's a hero
That's a model of his country
Let us here
The bravery of our Sentry

"I've saw raptures
In burning White phosphorescence

I've seen saints
Crucified with bullet holes

I've seen God
Bleeding from the eyes of a child

I've seen angels
Descend as drone strikes on families

I saw miracles
Made from the craters of shells

I've tasted heaven
In the ruins of dead cities

And I know ash
Is more sweeter then salvation
And paradise
Can be seen in the bombs that still blaze

For I have lost
All The things I believed
But I found
A new world of belief
Not in country
Or god
But in the brotherhood of peace
