The South Side Poem by Jones Jones

The South Side

I often strayed to the south side of town
Though mother would die if she knew,
For the life I've led, is so pure and well bred
That I'm too good to be true.

Although I lived the good life I did
I was bored and sick of it all,
I longed for the chance, to sing and to dance
In the south they know how to ball.

Last time I chanced to wander down south
I met a girl right out of a dream,
She led me astray and I'll cherish the day
She was cherry and I was the cream.

She took me to see a man that she knew
Who sold dreams to the kids in the street,
The dream was called junk, he sold me a hunk
It turned ice in my body to heat.

The dream I bought was the finest I'd had
All the people I met were so cool,
Not one of them knew, I was part of the crew
I was no longer anyone's fool.

The girl I met took me by the hand
And took me away to her room
She asked me to stay, so we spent the whole day
In a bed that was more like a womb.

The time she showed me was out of a book
Her body was heaven and hell,
What she gave, I'd take to my grave
Let's say I was tripped and I fell.

I've never been back and don't miss it at all
I'm happy right here where I am,
This is the life, that girl is my wife
And the baby we have is called Sam.
