The village well is a meeting place
Of friends and foes-
old and new!
Newly married women
and older disgruntled ones
All converging for a common commodity.
The village well is a melting point of different cultures
and ages
Temperaments and persuasions
It's an inevitable meeting place
For mortal enemies
Brought together by common interests
Here love is born
Enmity conceived
Wars are fought
Losers rebuffed
Territories marked
And victories declared.
Early evening
Is the best time to visit
Animals leave
People arrive
Children arrive with tiny pots
They play near the well
As their pots are filled
Women gossip
Lovers retreat to the periphery
To steal a chat.
Soon, dusk sets in
People have to depart
And animals take their spot
The hunt goes on.
