The Weight Of What Was Never Said Poem by Rajendra Prasad Meena Jaipur India

The Weight Of What Was Never Said

Some words
pause at the edge of the mouth
and choose silence instead,
settling quietly
inside the chest
where they slowly grow heavy.

We promise ourselves
there will be another moment,
a better time,
but time does not wait—
it turns hesitation
into distance.

The feelings left unspoken
press harder than memories,
and apologies never offered
echo louder than voices.

In the stillness of night,
these hidden thoughts
become restless,
asking why courage
arrived too late.

Sometimes silence
is mistaken for wisdom,
but often
it is only fear
learning how to stay.

And so we walk forward,
carrying sentences
we never released,
not knowing that words,
once spoken,
are lighter than regret.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
Style This poem is written in modern free verse; it has no rhyme or fixed meter. The short lines and gentle pauses reflect hesitation and silence, allowing the meaning to unfold gradually. The imagery is abstract and psychological rather than physical—words "pause, " silence "settles, " and hesitation becomes "distance." Subtle personification gives inner feelings a quiet, almost tangible presence. The tone is introspective, calm, and reflective, avoiding drama while conveying emotional depth. Overall, the style is lyric and meditative, focusing on inner experience rather than external events. Theme The central theme of the poem is the emotional burden of unspoken words. It explores how silence, often chosen out of fear or hesitation, can feel heavier than honest expression. The poem exposes on regret, missed opportunities, and the emotional distance created by delay. A secondary theme is the illusion of "later"—the belief that there will always be another chance to speak—contrasted with time's indifference. The poem suggests that expressing oneself brings relief, while silence can lead to lasting weight. In essence, the poem highlights the human struggle between fear and courage, emphasizing that spoken words can heal, whereas silence may persist as a burden.
