They Broke Into A Church Poem by Job Ombati

They Broke Into A Church

'And now to local news.
Thieves break into a local church and...'
Insignificant it appeared, this piece of news.
Burglars had broken into The Good Servant Church.
The church piano,
The church consecrated bread,
The church offerings,
Were all stolen!

They were six or so;
it was suspected.
And possibly from the vicinity.
And appeared, knew the church well.

The congregants
And pastor
Offered a prayer.
Not to have the things back,
Or for the death of the burglars,
Or have their hands chopped.
But for God to 'touch them'
And save them from evil!

But who would pray for the real burglar?
Gentle as he is.
One who robs with his tongue and garb.
And in the name of the Lord!

Who would offer a prayer.
Not to have the things back,
Or for the death of the burglar,
Or have his hand chopped.
But for God to 'touch him'
And save him from evil!

The burglar.
Accursed as he is,
is warded off by armed police.
But who wards off his blessed brother?

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
Society is very selective in the passing of judgement. Thieves who steal goods are severely condemned that those who steal having lied in God's name. The poem looks satirically at this queer phenomenon.
