Times Like These Poem by Mark E Webster

Times Like These

I need to remind myself
At times like these
Of the silly, simple, stupid things
That please a troubled soul.
I need to breathe the heady waft of flowers,
The mineral smell of showers,
The breath of wind on skin.
At times like these
I clutch for words to perfectly explain,
To search for peace,
To ease the pain
But once again
It's the silly, simple, stupid things that
Must remain.
I need to stroke the fur of a friendly cat,
Touch the bark of an age old tree
That spreads its branches far and wide.
At times like these I must resist the desire
To hole up in some soundless bower
That defies the laws of time.
But it's the silly, simple, stupid things
That must shake me from solitary intent.
I need to see prancing children play,
Espy the lover's stolen kiss,
Behold the worker's end of day,
The clumsy walker's trip.
At times like these I need more than
A distraction.
A clarion call for action.
Instead
The silly, simple, stupid things
Are all I need
At times
Like these.
