To Death Poem by Mohammad Yousef

To Death

BY Mohammad A. Yousef

You follow me,
a shadow cloaked in whispers,
I am running,
a fleeting breath, a pulse that races
to escape your relentless grasp.

If you chase me to the mountains,
where the peaks pierce the sky,
I will slip through the valleys,
find solace in the meadows,
the wildflowers dancing,
defying your pursuit.

In the embrace of the plains,
beneath the wide and open blue,
I will weave through grasses,
a wisp of wind,
while you linger in the heights,
lost in the echo of your own name.

Seek me in Syria,
amidst the ancient stones,
where history whispers through the ruins,
I will vanish into the canals of the Netherlands,
where the water reflects the sky,
and the lilies bloom,
unfettered by your shadow.

Our game seems never-ending,
a dance of cat and mouse,
your footsteps heavy on the earth,
while I glide like a ghost,
dancing on the edge of existence,
a flicker of light,
a heartbeat against the dark.

You linger in the silence
where time stretches thin,
I am the pulse of laughter,
the spark of life,
the moment before the fall.

You, with your cold fingers,
reach for my essence,
but I am the fleeting joy,
the warmth of a hand held tight,
the echoes of laughter,
the softness of a breath.

I run through the corridors of time,
past the doorways of despair,
where sorrow seeks to anchor me,
but I am the river,
ever-flowing,
ever-changing,
a current that sweeps me away.

So follow me, if you must,
but know this truth, dear Death:
I am the light in the twilight,
the hope in the shadows,
and though our game may be eternal,
I will always find a way
to dance just out of reach.
