To G.S. Poem by Philip Henry Savage

To G.S.

PRAY God to give me power to keep
Life's cureless evils out of sight;
Nor wander o'er the world and weep
The things I cannot do aright.

Let Manfred's load be bitter-borne,
And Werther cowardly outpour
His sorrows on the world … I scorn
To add one weight to weakness more.
