To My Father After His Operation Poem by John Schwarz

To My Father After His Operation

When my own organs began
To cipher, a tear (at last)
Dribbled down my cheek.
You, boozer, I guess you
Know something about ego!
For years you tramped around
In my mind like Frankenstein,
But now (at last!) I've
Got you frozen in some
Underground passageway.
Once you knocked your accordion
On the table and freed a nutty note.
I wish they could bang the
Devils out of you and me.
In the middle of my back there's an eeeee.
(I suspect it's the key note)
That won't unstick, and the doctor
Bungles up my bung toward a
Mildewed stop in my pipes.
God knows what grapefruits grow in my bowels.
Did I tell you I wear bifocals?
That my eyes slide from major to minor thirds?
Today, (ex catheter)
I try to screw up my courage to pee.
Lord, what will you send me?
Better grab a pipe for support.
Oh, me, oh my poor father
Perhaps you're not frozen after all.
I weep, I pee knives and forks
(hideous orange)
Damn-it-all, Pappy,
I still clump the ground in your monstrous shoes.
