To Unlock My Soul Poem by Mary Champion

To Unlock My Soul

You were not an obvious temptation,
out of my league by most measures you'd use.
You asked me to dance. How could I refuse?
But even then, there was no suggestion
of anything but harmless flirtation.
It wasn't as if I would ever lose
my head or my heart - assumed I could choose
when I wanted to end this obsession.
But that's hubris for you- my foolish pride
was deserving of mortification.
Finally learned I was not in control,
arrogance drowned in the tears that I cried
when I lost you and found my salvation.
For you turned the key to unlock my soul.
