Together Poem by Mary Champion

Together

He vowed, from their very first meeting,
he'd do all he needed to get her.
He knew that as long as he lived, there
was no way he'd ever forget her

And true to his word, if she'd have him,
then all that he owned he would give her.
He offered her land, wealth and titles
and he honestly meant to deliver.

His agents all tried to persuade her,
they highlighted each of his merits.
They thought he'd be certain to get her
in view of his being so zealous.

Worn down by the PR and pleading,
she said she'd take time to consider.
If he came on the following morning,
her verdict she vowed to deliver.

Excitedly, hoping to get her
to give him her hand as requested,
he arrived at the prearranged hour
to discover his suit was rejected.

He wept in sincere disappointment,
for he'd offered so much just to get her.
But she told him her answer was final
and another's proposal was better.

'But what has he got that I haven't?
Be certain, I'll top any offer.
My wealth rivals that of Jeff Bezos
and every promise I'll honour.'

But she answered 'I'm not to be traded.
I'll never use wealth as a measure.
I come free to he who completes me
when destiny brings us together.'
