Tonight Poem by Alejandro Torres

Tonight

I’ve packed my bags
Faster than the sun
Can fly into sight
But Darling
If I never make it back
Would you miss a single beat
If mid-step you felt a pinch
In your heart
Would you wonder
A single thought about me
A soldier after your heart
Would you cry for me
Standing in the door way
Slower than the moon
Wanes and waxes
Would you grant me a delicate smile
Before departure
And wonder
Who
Would walk with you
Just to be near
Who
Would give you roses
Just to say
I surrender to you
Darling, if I never voiced
The million I love you’s
I had stored for you
Its because the knot you create
Was so great
It was because the appeal to be strong
For you
Was too grand
Darling
In this war for your heart
I’ll never know my fate
I’ve done tours
And lost years
But tonight, Darling
Instead of who
Wonder how long
And with my last breath
I’ll make it so
Darling
Tonight I’ll run home to you
On Apollo’s wings
To wipe away the mistakes
A blind lover
Following silent orders
Will always make
The agony that holds my voice
Will evaporate like the clouds
And I’ll hold you close
Just to say your name
And whisper
How much I love you
I’ll hand up my tags
On the nail in the heart
That I gave to you
And we’ll make a home
On the battlefield
Together
