Trade Route Poem by Mary Champion

Trade Route

Over millennia
the glacier had ground the rock to rubble -
gouging out the softer soil.
Now, through that deep furrow,
the river ran.
This highway had arrived unplanned,
unscheduled
unbudgeted.

Never a whit perturbed by its venerable history,
the helmsman steered his small boat downstream -
canvas sails filled by the fresh autumn wind,
carrying its cargo of fresh tanned leather.
