Transcendent Love Poem by Trevor Toews

Transcendent Love

Have you ever been alone at night,
Waiting for first light,
And tried to will the earth to spin one minute faster?
It didn’t change its pace at all by what you said.
Or, did you fix your eyes toward the north,
And wish the sun would rise from there instead?
Did it change its angle in the least?
No, for when dawn finally broke, decidedly,
It did so in the east.

Most things don’t change by simply taking thought,
No matter how correct the thought may seem.
Nothing man can do will change the course
Of what God deems
Immovable.

We have seen the hand of God at work,
He was unstoppable!
For did we not assert our own ideas?
And yet, His plan transcended all our void pursuits
And the story unfolded just exactly as He pleased.

God-given love is like that,
A power no one fully understands,
Gentle as rain, yet a torrent irrepressible,
It doesn’t really bend to fit our plans.
Yet, if we love the Lord, and trust Him,
Yield our will to His, and accept it as we should,
We know that all things work together for our good.

Can we believe that?
Every thought, and choice and action,
Every circumstance, each mile walked, each puzzling test.
When submitted to His purpose, in the end, is best?

Love is the overpowering reason we have come into this place
Pause a moment…
Thank Him for His resolute direction,
His ever-present, guiding Love
His understanding Grace.

For neither death nor life,
The present nor the future,
Nor any power on earth, nor things above,
Neither height nor depth,
Nor any other creature,
Can ever separate us from this,
Transcendent Love.
