What is this need I feel for trees?
I cross open ground and I am drained.
But a longer walk through woodland
reinvigorates me.
Throughout the year
my eyes drink in their beauty
and my heart is lightened.
The delicate green of spring leaves,
pregnant with the promise of life renewed.
The cool welcome darkness of their summer shade.
The glorious palette of Autumn,
the brilliant climax of the season.
Even the stark splendour of their winter nakedness
moves me
and nourishes my soul.
Amidst the trees I am at home -
a safe arbour
for an unanchored spirit.
