Two Halves Poem by Jennifer Parks

Two Halves

They were two halves,
making one whole.
Inside their mother,
safely, did they grow.

One boy, one girl -
twins, maternal.
A sibling bond
guaranteed eternal.

Then one fateful day
did detour life’s course -
caused by drunken driver
hitting their car full force.

Mother took the most -
babies still inside.
Doctors rushed around
to see if they survived.

From the blurry images
which shown upon the screen
two babies there were, but
all was not as it seemed.

Emergency surgery commenced
to save the lives of three;
a cesarean section needed -
they must save the babies!

Babies taken out -
oh, how the doctors cried!
Through all of their hard work
the baby boy still died.

Brother gave his life
so that his twin could live.
Among all the acts of love,
only this could he give.

They were two tiny halves –
supposed to make one whole.
Because of a drunken driver,
only one will we ever know.
