Walk In The Garden Poem by D A Phinney

Walk In The Garden

Once upon a time
And not so long ago
There was a world much better
Than the one we've come to know
The air was clean and pure
The sky not brown or gray
And everyone could see the sun
Most any time of day
People sang from their hearts
In joyful praise
That no spoken words could convey
For the world was like a garden
And we were the caretakers then
But we were sold
Down a long dark road
I want to walk in the garden again

Then the trees could sing
The grass would whisper to our souls
There were no kings and no sacrifice
We wandered where we chose
Life was filled with song
And love with harmony
Ourselves we'd see in every
Thing made by you or by me
People lifted their eyes
And sang to the heavens
And had no desire to be free
For the world was like a garden
And we were once its friend
But pride grew bold
And our hearts grew cold
Please let me just see the garden again

I want to walk in the garden again
I want to touch the world I knew then
I want to play with the mother
Of sea, sky and brother
And harness my life to the wind

For when the earthquake erupts
And our world has crumbled
Which of our works
Will not have been humbled
Which of us then
Will confess we have stumbled
When it's too late to make an amend
Or will we walk in the garden again
