How long it is since childhood passed
though at the time it seemed to last
forever.
We walked the old familiar ground
past high banked hedges only found
in Devon.
A herd of cows grazed in a field
and close to hand, but well concealed,
small rodents
went rustling through the green arcade.
The sounds we heard alone betrayed
their presence.
The mist of early morning cleared.
The endpoint of our journey neared
in good time.
Then thirty classmates - said their prayers
with Mrs Hobbs and Mrs Ayres
at school time
I guess, I could compile a list
of all the things we children missed -
the tough side
of country living; being poor.
But, looking back, I can't ignore
the upside.
