Divided by the words we dare not speak,
imprisoned by the things we leave unsaid.
In fear of all the damage we might wreak,
avoiding pathways angels fear to tread.
For words, though caref'lly chosen, can mislead,
betraying their emotional intent,
and no one lacks the power to misread,
the clever, crafted message that was sent.
For decades now, we've reined our tongues and lied,
in dread of all the anguish we might loose,
choked back the bitter tears we might have cried;
convinced that our confessions served no use.
For if we gave our words and tears free rein,
they'd wash away these masks that hide our pain.
