What did I do today?
The time went by so fast,
no time for a cuppa,
no time for a call,
morning barely started
and somehow it had passed.
Desk, desk, in a flurry,
papers shifting round,
one thought interrupted
before it touched the ground.
What is the priority?
Which way do I turn?
Every little fire
seems to think it has to burn.
What did I do today?
Besides wish for my pillow,
an early morning start,
not a break to think,
not a moment just to breathe
and gather up my thoughts.
I opened up my notebook,
then forgot what I had planned,
picked up one small problem
and ended with ten in hand.
A meeting ran too long,
a question changed its shape,
someone said, "just quickly, "
and there went half the day.
What did I do today?
I really couldn't say,
I know I never stopped,
but the hours slipped away.
No time for a cuppa,
no time for a call,
just chasing little pieces
before they start to fall.
By lunchtime I was wondering
if morning really came,
by afternoon I'd answered things
I couldn't even name.
The list was getting longer,
my patience getting thin,
and every time I finished,
another thing walked in.
What did I do today?
Maybe more than I can see,
maybe all those little things
were quietly counting me.
The clock says I am finished,
the chair has had enough,
my brain has packed its suitcase
and officially given up.
So tomorrow can keep waiting,
the emails can survive,
I'm finally making that cuppa -
and calling it a day.
