What Is Is What Is Poem by Manabendra Lal Bhuyan

What Is Is What Is

Creep creeps creep into what remains uncrept.
Something begins to claim what was never claimed.

Fall falls through fall, before anything knows what it costs.
Ruin ruins what it was, even as it remains what remains.
Rot rots what remains, and remains rot within what rots.

Root roots into ruin, rooting ruin into root.
Creep creeps deeper, where rot has already set its foot.

Hush hushes what remains, till remains no longer remain.
Still stills what moves, till movement forgets to move.
Ruin remains ruin, until even ruin forgets to remain.

Claim claims all, till nothing remains to be claimed.
Root roots through all, till all is root and nothing remains.

Creep no longer creeps; creep has become what remains.
Rot rots into stillness, and stillness rots into rot.
Remain remains, but no one remains to name what remains.

Creep creeps, creeping what creeps.
Rot rots rot, rotting what was rot.
Nature hushes when hush becomes nature.
Still stills still, till stillness becomes nature.

Still, I stayed still; still hoping the stillness would still me, waiting.
I wait for the wait to end, but the wait becomes what I become while waiting.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
Fragments of stone sinking into the ground, roots spreading through them, surfaces worn smooth, with nothing left to mark what they once were.
