When all the lights go out
and we are plunged into
the darkness
we may perhaps call to mind
things we have forgotten like
how to tread carefully asking
for pardon with every step we take
how to listen to the silent cries
of pain and suffering around us
how to reach out those in despair
and embrace them with compassion
as if our own lives depended on it
if we want to call ourselves human
