When Dreams Come True - Beware! Poem by Mary Champion

When Dreams Come True - Beware!

There it was, staring her right in the eyes,
the one thing that should make her world complete,
sate the longing that had blighted her life,
overshadowing her ev'ry success,
the gaping hole in her self-confidence-
a hole she never expected to fill.
But there he stood, quite unexpectedly,
eyes alight with naked admiration.
A thunderbolt pierced her heart, transfixed her.
Her genome was somehow reprogrammed.
Just a temporary transformation,
but for a few glorious, golden months
she was beautiful. She felt beautiful.
But, when a plain Jane is blessed with beauty,
she is likely to be cursed with madness.
Common sense compromised and disabled,
her spinning head surrendered to passion
giving her impetuous heart free rein.
There was only one possible outcome -
a catastrophic, cataclysmic crash
broke her heart into a million pieces,
and, decades since that dreadful denouement,
her bruised and battered reason still struggled
to reassemble all the bloody shards.
