When the guns fell silent,
Many years ago.
With men and boys own life blood
Ebbing away so slow.
From Generals to lowly grunts
They were told their job was done.
To those there, did it really matter
Who actually had won?
When the guns fell silent
Death and peace engulfed the lands.
Yes the guns fell silent
The last place they made a stand.
When the guns fell silent
Years ago in lore
They said ‘twould end the battle
So we need battle again no more.
But after each fight that followed
Lessons were not often learned,
And never forget the bad times
When returning troops were spurned.
When the guns fell silent
We told them to go back home
But the sad and lonely silence
Might end the fight for some.
When the guns fell silent
There may have been victories won.
In the big picture, enemies stopped,
Although the price was often shunned.
Let's try to keep the guns silent,
By wars of words - called diplomacy.
May wars become discussions,
And then, we may finally live free.
When the guns next fall silent,
May it not be in vain.
Let us learn to live with silence
So lasting peace might reign.
