Winter In Bengal (Sonnet) Poem by Dipankar Sadhukhan

Winter In Bengal (Sonnet)

When winter treads across Bengal's lush meads,
Soft sunlit silk upon the river banks;
The dew like crystal gleams where mustard bleeds,
And gilds the mist that crowns the morning ranks.

Cauliflower lifts its frosted, ivory pride,
Red carrots blaze with sanguine, molten fire;
The humble radish splits the frozen side,
While peas retreat in earth's concealed desire.

Shiuli descends like stars at dawn's first breath,
Its fragrance crowns the temple steps with grace;
Palash recalls the pulse of summer's death,
While marigolds stand sentinel in space.

And rice-cake smoke with jaggery ascends,
Thus winter leaves its warmth that never ends.
