It was my heart's tragedy to be born dumb -
cut off from its mother-tongue
which would not…
could not articulate its needs and desires-
refused to express its deepest feelings.
Enslaved by the intellect
the tongue spoke only of reason,
eschewed the irrational
was reluctant to admit to emotion.
It was left to the hands to make the heart known.
But the written word must be read to be heard
and reading has fallen out of fashion.
The dumb heart weeps silently,
a turbulent cauldron of unspoken emotion
that is approaching boiling point.
