A queer red got mixed into my pallet
How did it get there, I couldn't detect
It ruined my painting; my image
The thing I have been working on for my whole life
The color: a dark, stale red
I watched it sink deep into my canvas, slowly dry
To the naked eye, it was ugly and offensive
So, I attempted to wipe it off, but my canvas grew fond of it
I gazed for centuries, taking in its scorned charm
It might have destroyed one of my works, but it enriched the rest.
