Write Off Poem by Mary Champion

Write Off

Steering round the obstacles that litter my life's road,
reading all the signs, adhering to the High-way Code,
I swerved, cos if I hadn't, I'd have hit someone real bad,
then found I'd smashed the sweetest thing that I had ever had.

The estimate for making good the damage I could see,
demanded more than everything the others owed to me.
They towed away my dearest dreams, and all my hopes were lost.
That guy I didn't drive into, don't know what his life's cost.

I stand and watch my heart and soul converted into scrap
and wish I'd never fallen for that ‘love thy neighbour' crap.
So if I ever get a second chance,
I'll never give the rest a second glance.
If people step into my path, I will not swerve next time,
I don't care who I mutilate, I'm gonna have what's mine.

If I'd have hit that guy, I'd have no more
than dents and minor scratches and some gore,
but I've just smashed a dream beyond repair
and I'm the only one who seems to care.
