Writing On The Wall - Poem by Kathleen Erin Jones

I should've seen it coming.
Nothing like this happens to me.
I guess I was just to hopeful.
To naive.

My tender heart,
So unaccustomed to anything to callous
Has a way of falling into

It's weird.
I guess she was just so brought in by
Promising outlooks and wonder,
She forgot to look where she was going.

I tried to hold her back.
I tried logic, facts,
Everything I could think of.
Nothing worked.

I tried to safeguard from to much trouble,
But after awhile,
Even I was brought in by
Beguiling circumstances.

We were quite a pair,
My heart and I.
She would help me daydream of you,
While I helped her with ideas on how to get you.

I could see what was going on.
She couldn't.
I tried to pull back,
But it was to late.

The day came,
Oh, fateful day!
She was caught unawares
Until the last moment.

Eyes to the ground.
Look up.
Nothing that we wanted to see,
In the windows to your soul.

Then the words,
Ugly, nasty words!
Blows to hard for her to handle.
Tenderness is so easily beat.

And then,
When she was down for the count,
I saw you take aim, cock,
And fire.

The worst words for love.
Every syllable a new bullet.
So many holes.

All the warm feelings drained
From her.
I watched hopelessly,
Almost as would a viewer of a show.

There's nothing I could do.
Well, I guess I could've hit you.
Tried to come up with something to avenge her with.
But nothing came to mind.

I wonder if it's better to die
Completely clueless,
Or find out
Right at the end.

Post-mortem took hold,
Hardening my friend.
I entered in.
Icy sadness now fills her.

Memories now come to dance by her
They don't care.
It's not them who suffer.

I cry bitterly, cursing her stupidity.
Not only have I lost you,
But now she's gone.
My closest friend.

I can't feel.
The frost has numbed
It's not fair.

Where was the writing on the wall?
