Yours Poem by Mozafar Ali

Yours

The first day, I told you it was yours,
For keeps I said, only yours!
As you lay on the bed now, as I sit beside you,
Hand in hand, I was always yours.
You follow with ‘and I’m always yours too’
Your brown skin from our Monsoon days,
Now pale and your eyes half closed.
But I still love you, forever I am yours!
As the surgeon comes and smiles telling us it’s time,
You lean towards me and whisper, ‘I love you…
… But it’s time for my operation’ and you lay back down!
As I stand with tears in my eyes, without making a sound,
Not even ‘I love you too’ I just turn around.
I knew that you’ll always remember me,
Remember that it was always yours,
The words stuck in your head as I leave through the operating doors.
Time comes, and your eyes open,
My love running through you veins.
But I am nowhere to be found,
So you call upon the nurse,
To ask, if I’m still around!
The Nurse replies with sadness and says,
‘They didn't tell you whose heart they gave? ’
So she hands her a note, that I wrote that day,
‘I told you it’s yours, it’s yours, always! ’
