A friend

Just around the corner is a friend indeed
When called upon in need
Sincere, vibrant, resilient
A flower in the garden
Or a companion in silence
Treading the path of life
Inch by inch or mile by mile
Leaving the footsteps behind
For us to remind
The time that we shared
With the heart that cared
It flew like a feather
Yet falls back from ether
Ever so gently to rest upon memory
Light and soft is remembrance's touch indeed
A listener, a teacher, a friend indeed
Just around the corner
When called upon in need.

I like the way the ending dovetails with the beginning because it shows that there is an endless loop of friendships, recurring in our lives, the same emotions triggered by new events, the same gratitude and giving repeated over and over. It's precious to affirm this reality. And your description of time (of friendship and togetherness) as feather light
shows its surprising resilience, even its strength although you might think it's the most fragile of earthly emotion. No, it persists. (Report) Reply

    A listener, a teacher, a friend indeed
    Just around the corner
Blessed are those who have friends, who make friends, and retain them for life. Beautiful poem. Thank you. (Report) Reply

Poem of the Day

poet Christina Georgina Rossetti

Go from me, summer friends, and tarry not:
I am no summer friend, but wintry cold,
A silly sheep benighted from the fold,
A sluggard with a thorn-choked garden plot.
