Every new dawn is a false dawn, every day a home defeat
The sea of dejection is washing over his street
He used to do it well but he’s long since lost the knack
He’s looking in the mirror, but who’s looking back?
He misses who he used to be, but that person won’t return
On this one day when you don’t want to have time to burn
No-one’s coming to the rescue, so it could be curtains
Being alive doesn’t always mean living, for certain

Everyone’s riveted by the brilliant new year
No-one’ll ever know if in a few years he’d be doing fine
It all started at 8: 30 back in a nice year
And now it’s all over at 11: 59

It’s all-singing, all-dancing, down on Plum Lane
No white walls, no dark skies, no house becoming a drain
That disco beat can be heard from here, as well as glasses jangling
To have it all so cruelly taken away when a good night was dangling
A backlog of bile, interminable, his head a brimful of trash-a
But it won’t be a dramatic exit, no need to become a car crasher
If anything isn’t broken, then now’s the time to break
And attain a sleep from which he won’t ever wake
