How To Write Like You're In Love

So you've got someone to impress.
A girl or boy, or someone quite in between.
First find some ink with a glossy sheen,
Parchment slightly yellowed with age,
And lest you forget—
Dappled sunlight and rose petals.

You'll want to scatter the rose petals like wedding rice upon your writing desk,
Then position the dappled spots of sunshine very precisely.
One on the corner of a polaroid picture worn down from fingerprints.
Right on the edge, so the faces go unseen, but the background is bright.

Take your second spot of sunlight and let it flutter and flicker—
Softly, gently, but never warmly—
Across your yellowed parchment.

Take your third and final dappled spot and seat yourself in the chair.
The one in front of your desk.
The one with the hole in the fabric, fraying at the seams.
The one where we met for a split second, a fleeting race through dreams.

Let the spot rest upon your shoulders, feel its warmth soak into your skin,
Then pick up your sword, as a pen is far too strong for the occasion,
Dip it in ink and let darkness splotch and scar the page.

Cut your words into the paper.
Like a heart carved into tree bark.
Write of goosebumps and heartbeats.
Tell the story of fluffy clouds and birdsong.
Remember the way laughter punctured the air?

Do you?

Smell the basil from the garden.
Smell the lilacs on the hillside.
Taste the peaches and whipped cream.
Feel the coy, feather light touches.

Speak in repetition and rhyme until you believe it yourself.
And then, suddenly, spontaneously, miraculously...

You're just a little in love.
