My Niece's Visit
She came back today...
Ripened bananas to blacken like congealed
Boot polish, in the fruit bowl
And the geckos to mark out new
Territories on the sweaty walls.
While we speed over carefully maintained
Bitumen, towards over-stuffed city stores
Old MTT buses, rattle, unreliably
Along beachside roads, leaving a parquetry
Of dust along casement windows,
She borrows jumpers and reclaims skirts
As the Pacific sees-through tourists
From its ocean bed of variegated coral
And yellow-faced angel fish
