Spirit Of Winter

T'was a pleasant winter morning
belle walked home from the village square
after days of snowing and blizzards
streaks of daylight had broken through the clouds
as she walked, unknown to her two eyes were watching her.

she watched the trees, bushes and glass panes all covered in frost
the ponds and rivers were all frozen
fathoms below the ice
aquatic life had survived
waiting perhaps for a fresh whiff of air
a surge of life that they deserved

as belle walked through the freshly shovelled path
her heart was filled with anxious expectation
for her father as her father's battalion
was fighting the invaders at the frontier
these invaders were marauders
who came for plunder and had to be stopped
whatever the cost maybe

I hate the winter she said as she reached a clearing
why that's a shame dear, exclaimed a voice behind her
she turned and saw a woman dressed in white
her lips were red as fresh cherry,
her hair the colour of ripe corn,
her eyes cold and clear.
who are u? belle asked
I am the SPIRIT OF WINTER she said

why do u hate winter? she aked
it is a cold lifeless and unproductive season was belle's reply
cold, maybe but lifeless? certainly not.let me show you said winter.
the scene changed and winter said look at the cherubs...

belle observed the kids out in the open
having snowball fights and making snow angels
some were making snowmen, buttons for it's eyes,
carrots for it's nose and a scarf and snowcap completed it.
some were skating on the frozen pond
another pushing up his sled up a frost covered mountain
they seeme to make a statement
'nothing can stop us frm having fun' it seemed
a zeal that is often lost with age.

but the it's still unproductive, and
many a life is lost in the snow belle said
my purpose said winter is to end one circle of life
so another one can begin
it's COLD LOGIC she stated
with this statement she covered a seed with snow
when she uncovered it a small sprouting plant
stood in it's place
belle understood.

wat is your purpose here? she asked
I come as the bearer of bad news said winter
your father fought bravely against the invaders
they were defeated in the end
but your father's heart was impaled
with an enemy sword..
mortally wounded he staggered through the forest
but lost his footing and fell
then I approached, i embraced him
my coldness numbing his pain
then I put my shawl around him and said
' ssshhhh! ! ! my child,
be silent be still, be silent be still'
his last words were 'please tell belle'
then he died at peace, on my lap.

tears were welling up in belle's eyes
winter said your father did not die in vain
now you must be brave like him
with that the spirit kissed her forehead
and dissolved into the air.

but even the coldness of the kiss
could not chill her warm tears
I will see him again she said
but that wont be until many winters have passed.
with that she walked alone
back to her mother.
