Never Look Back

When he was a boy, only in the fourth grade,
He was in love with a girl called Anna McJade.
But she couldn't stand up to whatever people say,
And it broke the boy's heart to see her treated this way.

'Now listen here, Anna, I say,
You cannot let them push you around that way!
You have to hold your head high, get back on track,
And whatever you do, you never look back.'

So the boy made sure nobody made her a fool,
They were best friends up to high school.
And slowly her shyness began to fade,
Nobody ever again made fun of Anna McJade.

After graduation, to home they went back,
When Anna suddenly said, 'Listen here, Jack.
We've known each other back to our schoolyard days,
But I think it's time we went separate ways.

'Y'see, you're going to college and I to university,
We'll meet new people, have new diversity,
No more will we be able to hang out at your locker,
Since you'll be an artist and I'm training as a doctor.

'Of course, you're a very important person to me,
When I thought I was lost, you made me see,
When I was drowning, when my hope fell dim,
You showed up, Jack, and you taught me to swim.

'I'm sure we'll see each other again one day,
I'll show you my husband; our children can play.
And I'll always be grateful to you, dear Jack,
You taught me courage, you brought my life back.'

He really wanted to tell her his love one day,
But he did nothing but watch as she walked away.
Anna McJade walked away from Jack,
And with her head held high, she never looked back.
