Down the road I wander pathless
Walking aimless seeking the way
Through the brae and the meadow
Hearing the echo of the silence

Wandering within loneliness, long I've waited
Sadness surrounded me, then silence faded
Darkness deceived me when day raised
Brightness blinded me for a light blazed

Around the tree of Life a lake there lies
Of fearful flames and tender waves of ice
Where in one essence both were intertwined
The sinuous rivers of the Heart and Mind.

I cannot frame the fire of Beauty's song,
The distant crawling notes of wingless birds;
A fiery spirit fiercely burns my tongue:
I speak, it dies, and ashes are all my words.

When I am old I will have known
Of all there is of art and song.

Then I will cry, when I be done,

Were I thy hand, thy soft, lascivous hand,
That glides and swerves along thy snowy breasts:
A snake that savours every grain of sand
Upon thy flesh and on thy thighs there rests.

I am a shadow of it all,

On chords of rocks and tunes of trees,
The bird that round the imagination whirled
And set his nest on the primordial seas.

No, never will I see thy light in me.

A light that has flickered and failed;
A light conceived as gone;
Lightning the flame of a broken candle
