Paper Doll

So hold me down and fold me
Make your creases here and there
I'll pick out a pretty dress
And put flowers in my hair

Swaying with the wind
In a web of lights and steel
Down at the county fair
Falling in love on the Ferris Wheel

Hold me close against the chill
As we slowly come back down
I don't want this to end
But heavy feet touch sticky ground

You keep looking past me
Say I'm long, and lean and tall
Hold my hands, I feel a little shaky
Just like a paper doll

Maybe you could sketch for me
With your blunt, gray lead
The spot where my heart should be
I need a backbone too; could you please use pen

Please draw tiny blood lines
Connecting head and heart and feet
They can be a little crooked
At the places they all meet

When your work is done
I'm covered but feeling thin
Then I remember
How beautiful things are when they first begin

How we piece each other together
With a drunken artists' hands
Ruin what was fine enough
With foolhardy plans
