Strange Family

First I saw you, shy, yellow and scared
A stranger brought into our house
the thought i always feared
helpless, i, a frightened grey mouse

As i lay in my miserable corner
Too wide-eyed to think, dream, sleep
I watch you intently, a foreigner
my trust, you earn, you keep

About you i learnt a simple truth
that this growth should take time
i am no longer a depressed blue
as you dared not cross a line

You did not try to be my friend
you did not force me to speak
but around me you'd never pretend,
and my secrets were mine to keep

Over time i came to realise
it was hard not to laugh at you
to me you'd never feed me lies
what you said i knew was true

Out into the sunshine we strode
this sight a familiarity
lifted was this burdenous load
came as strangers, left as family
