Futility

I looked out the window
On a lovely winter night
Hit me how life was so lucky
How everything was going right

Sure, I didnt have a lover
Or an ear to stand me by
But I had my wits about me
And a mind ne' prone to a lie

I could, if I wanted, go higher
I could, if allowed, slip down
I could hold up my head and listen
Or pout and whine and frown

And I thought they're fools who do not listen
To reason so clear and try
Instead to reach out for a wisdom
Fated out of reach to lie

For how much use is a book
A potrayal of emotion spoke
For that it is but a wish
And a faroff forlorn hope.

I thought and I thought of wisdom,
Of chasing a moving goal;
Transcend as you might one level,
There's always a couple more.
