Bartlett Adamson Poems

By purple hills and opalescent sea
And sunlit leagues of plain they lived, and they
Were summery-hearted all, and life was gay,
And peace was theirs, and love, and liberty.

Under the banner of brave men and true,
Under our banner, white stars on the blue,
Wide be the friendship we give to the world.
So shall our freedom be
...

The workers of Kembla, those leaders of men,
Those leaders of deed as in thought.
They challenged the might of the pound and the yen,
...

Yet once more, my fellow-workers! Yet once more you lead the van,
Armed with all unselfish motives, fighting for your fellowman.
Never was a worthier struggle than this Indonesian cause.
Never gentler people suffered under more degrading laws.

Anzacs

By purple hills and opalescent sea
And sunlit leagues of plain they lived, and they
Were summery-hearted all, and life was gay,
And peace was theirs, and love, and liberty.
And when the clarion sounded suddenly,
They went, a rollicking band of boys at play
Tilted at doom, and there, at Anzac Bay,
Died...but they taught the world what men they be.

And Anzac now is an enchanted shore;
A tragic splendor, and a holy name;
A deed eternity will still acclaim;
A loss that crowns the victories of yore;
A glittering golden dome for evermore
Shining above the minarets of fame
