The Sterling Pearls: An Entreaty

THE STERLING PEARLS: AN ENTREATY
(For Malia and Sasha Obama)
O sweet Chanterclear my noble friend!
And sterling slender pinnacle, a swarthy dame
Recall thee Africa is an ancestral clime
Ye daughters of a mighty-flame-following-a-tiny-spark

5 Mind you there are four cities in Africa viz
Nairobi, Pourt Harcourt, Soweto and Kumasi
Sisters to New York, Chicago, Washington and Philadelphia
Ghana is as good as Kenya; Accra as nice as Nairobi

The epicentre of the world is the land of gold and oil
10 Whence they are not sold but used for our roads and highways
And nuggets sparkle in dint of tropic Sun
At sidewalks trodden by hoofs, feet and tyres alike
A beacon of hope in African democracy is where I dwell
In Ghana the name John is divine in politics
15 But this one has tomfooled himself to the gallows
And linchpins shattered parliament into yet unsorted fragments
Never quiver, we need wipe them off ones and for all
Not that they are hated but we love democracy more
There we can abide in true peace and tranquility
20 Our men preach with virile faith in defiance of Israel
In this haven everyone beams in hospitality
Not only in Moving Pick, a Renaissance Mayflower
Hearken this techy brain of your father’s other land
For our IT village is World Trade Centre in Africa
25 And three-tier interchange over golden roads part of the panorama
Our theater resembles a mighty air flight, Chinese-enabled
Surprising we never travel to space but our men do the calculations
No wonder Africa’s Nobel laureates are men of Art and Peace

In the Garden City peacocks still remain proud
30 A fact to bear in mind o sweet duo
Cocoa and shea we eat and rub our supple skins
To compete with the best standards elsewhere in radiance
Also, donkeys cart our onions and melons into barns

And in Mole up north elephants swing open classroom windows
35 And school children skip like lambs
And lions roar and everyone stampedes in frenzy
There a mystical stone defies distance in going to bed
We don’t pursue baboons that snatch our fowls, one taboo to note
And we share banana with our mona monkeys numbering yonder us
40 And partridges lay eggs by refuse dumps undisturbed
There is classic waterfall at the centre of centre, kintampo to say ones more
One wonder, up north magma solidify on trees while volcanoes remain extinct
And monsoon winds and harmattan never heckle like hurricanes

Over the Atlantic Coast there is no grueling duel
45 As kings and sultans of Africa are in consensus
Together with queens, celebrities and common men
That one of two return to thy fatherland

‘Tis proper and befitting for the sage and poet
To tie his bull by a tether to a mighty pole
50 Which can neither break nor loose
I like butterflies, I like jocund girls
In pliant hands and ensconcing splendor

Hearken the voice from the Coast of Africa,
Seeking thy hand, mind audacity of hope, thee Malia or Sasha
55 In my rural modesty and thy royal highness
A plenipotentiary with vision of Africa unbound
Of a golden future time for a common tongue
Deliver me from oppression, restore me manifold
By stretching out your favour of insight into the realms
60 I cannot but behold thy swallow hole from whence we came
As a romantic theorist yearning for an American
When I escape from these labyrinthine pathways
Created by the Negro spiritual and potentates
Hearken me, tell your dad and mum
65 And bless a son of thy fatherland
