The Promise
Brandon Ulmer

As I muse life’s toughest question,
Is there a promise that exists of what to come?
Philosophies war in my head.

For one says you only have a brain,
Composed of physical matter alone and the promise of Epicurean’s words,
“When you die, death can no longer harm you”
But I find no guaranteed promise to life’s toughest question.
For in this, there is no value in my state of being.

As a tree being beat down in the most violent of storms,
Philosophies engage my thoughts, believe this!
Take comfort for everything that happens, happens naturally,
This conflicts me, for my existence was in vain.
Yet again, no promise of a satisfaction in the answer to the natural way life.

Why do I seek to find an answer?
Why do I war with philosophy?
Why do I seek a promise of finding what lies after death?
Maybe there is more than just natural physical way…

At last, I think I found a more promising answer,
My perpetual persistence to finding the promise, that rages not in my brain,
The struggle is wrestled in my mind.
Life continues.

Yet I find no promise in this dualistic mentality,
For the agnostics chant,
“We don’t know eternity will be wonderful, therefore, we don’t that it will be bad”
Is there no sound answer to the promise of,
What happens after death?

The only promise that I have,
Is the inevitably and promise of, death.
But what if there is a promise, an answer, the truth to the question,
What happens when you die?
