Christmas

Christmas

They do not really praise his birth,
but take it as excuse
to lay up treasure on the earth
and cook the family goose.
They send out cards (but take good care
to note those who reply) ,
they put Christ's image everywhere
but do not wonder why.
They say his name in every breath,
but break commandments all,
they covet, and they sponsor death,
and worship in the mall.
Perhaps they sometimes sense it's wrong,
but hide their faint unease
in alcohol and ‘Christmas' song
and lit-up Christmas trees.

And year on year these things appear
and more it takes to drown the fear
that Heaven isn't coming near,
that the final bill will be too dear.
With sozzled brain and mind unclear,
perhaps they'll wipe away a tear,
and know not why it trickles here,
blinded as they are, like Lear.
