Fruity Lass

FRUITY LASS

CHANDRANI SAHA NANDI

Lying on the courtyard under a vine
A humming sound sweet came to mine.
A tune drenched in green grapes' juice,
Low though catching, that none can refuse,
Came in slow pace. I looked to the hedges
And saw a country nymph selling nuts and fruits,
Wearing a head dress and a purple skirt,
Advancing in sweet grace being alert,
Chaunting her trade song
In a mood joyous that cures weariness along.
Seeing me purplexed she hailed me as 'beau!
Won't you buy fruits and nuts that rarely grow,
And brought from far away woods and hills
Where flows a spring of sweet water that heals
A mind, love-sick, care-worn, anxious,
To find a beloved, charming and gorgeous! '
I said, If that spring-water makes the fruits juicy
With that healing touch of amorous cure, you say,
Then I am ready to buy all your fruits
And delightful nuts of rare grown species
Gladly as my hope, lass, seems to turn into real,
For my destiny sent you to me who kneel
Before you, and ask for a consent
To give your hand as my beloved lady, permanent.
